Health tourism began to develop in Croatia in the 19th and early 20th century. The first places where medical tourism has begun to take shape were the areas with healing water, marine areas with favorable climate and healing mud baths. Especially know for this nature healing conditions were Opatija, Lošinj, Crikvenica, Lipik, Varaždin Spas because they have already begun to organize intense social life for the guests who came from all surrounding countries.
